POSON FESTIVAL

 

                          ...Poson  Festival...

      Poson is a very important religious festival for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated in June every year on a Poya day. Because it is on this day that Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. Arahat Mahinda Thero introduced Buddhism to king Devanampiyatissa at Mihintale. On poson day, many Buddhists visit temples and sacred places to observe religious activities and listen to sermons. Houses and streets are decorated with lanterns and lights. People also organize dansal to give free food and drinks. This shows kindness, generosity and sharing among people. The poson festival reminds people about the importance of Buddhism and its teachings.
